Latino members of our parish have signed up to bring some of their favorite foods from their home countries, so you can expect the culinary delights as you’ve enjoyed in years past. We are still looking for more people to bring food representing their own traditions; if you would like to bring a dish to the event, please contact the parish office at 612-529-9684.

Proceeds from food sold at the event will go to benefit the Our Lady of Guadalupe Committee as they prepare to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe this December.

As you probably remember from your own school days, the first weeks of a new school year are an exciting and challenging time for teachers and students alike. This week, take a moment to remember our Ascension staff and students in your prayers as we wish them a productive, safe and successful school year.

As a way of showing our gratitude, our friends at the East Gateway Partnership hosted a picnic in Ascension’s Peace Garden for the night shift of the Broadway Beat. With delicious fried chicken, beans and corn provided by Broadway’s own Louisiana Fried Chicken, soft drinks from Merwin’s, and Kemp’s ice cream sandwiches, a fine time was had by officers and neighbors alike on one of the most gorgeous evenings of the summer.

In light of everything the Fourth Precinct does to make our North Minneapolis community the safe place it is, this is just one small way we say, “Thank you!”

Neighborhood Night of Peace is made possible through the cooperation of Church of the Ascension, Visitation Monastery of Minneapolis, Masjid an-Nur, The Basilica of Saint Mary, Turning Point, Cub Foods, Kemps, Ascension Place, and Our Lady of the Lakes Church Mission Group (Spicer, MN).

Being at Ascension was not the only first for choir camp this year — the camp was also blessed by the willingness of the Lundstrum Center to teach these young people some other aspects of performance besides singing, especially dance — a discipline close to the heart of the Center.  Camp participants benefited from two hours spent on a field trip to the Lundstrum Center itself to learn dance performance skills.

The core of Basilica Choir Camp is choral singing, ably directed by Pat Arasim, director of the Minneapolis Youth Chorus, and Teri Larson, Director of Music at The Basilica. Instruction on musical instruments is provided by Orff Specialist Chris Ludwig and everything is accompanied on the piano by Walter Tambor, who also provides a connection to music from cultural traditions from all over the world. Choir Camp’s mission is to provide children of diverse abilities and experiences an intensive one week immersion into choral singing and world music. Through the efforts of the staff and the choir camp volunteers, the 4th through 8th graders attending choir camp get a world class musical education, all in the space of a week.

Friday was a special day for the campers and their families (not to mention the staff and people of Ascension) as the choir performed two concerts in Ascension’s beautiful worship space. The musical skills of these young people were truly impressive and speak well of the efforts of camp staff and the dedication of the campers themselves.

Between the concerts, campers and families took advantage of the beautiful July weather to have a picnic in the Ascension gardens. Some well deserved rest after a week of hard work!

Basilica Choir Camp is held each summer near the end of July. Camp meets from 9 AM to Noon for one week (Monday through Friday). The cost is $100 per camper and scholarships are always available. For more information, please contact Teri Larson at 612-333-1381.
