May 22nd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Ascension Cafeteria

Transportation provided within North Minneapolis. Please call for a ride by 3:30pm: 763-228-5409

The Peace Dinner community is celebrating life in abundance! Now in its fifth year, our monthly Peace Dinner continues to be one of the primary ways that the parish lives its mission to provide a sanctuary in which all are invited to recognize, acknowledge and live God’s presence. All are invited to join us as we live into the fullness of our life and ministry in North Minneapolis.

The Peace Dinner is a collaborative effort between Church of the Ascension and The Liemandt Foundation and brings families and youth from our neighborhood, school, and wider community together to create a time and place conducive to mutual relationship building where all voices can be heard, community and family treasures can be recognized and celebrated, and genuine needs can be served. At each gathering a family style dinner is served, together youth and adults lead positive activities for all ages, and lasting friendships are made. Our time together is guided by Search Institute’s Developmental Assets®, 40 common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults. (http://www.search-institute.org/developmental-assets).

At the heart of the dinner’s success is the Peace Dinner Youth Team. Supported by Ascension parishioner, John Dols, ten youth take responsibility for emceeing the evening, an intergenerational mixer, and running gym games for kids. The Youth Team serves as a model for the servant leadership, hospitality and community building that has become a hallmark of the program. A diverse group of youth, they have developed friendships across lines of difference that often serve to divide us from one another. All youth are invited to learn more about this unique opportunity to grow as leaders.

If you have any questions please contact Liz Coenen, Executive Director of the Liemandt Foundation, at 612-875-1306 or www.liemandtfoundation.org

“He made it into an active ritual of servant-hood”

Quotes from Richard Rohr

In the Washing of the Feet, every age, gender, skin color was represented here at Ascension. The line was long and the pace was patient. The actions were moving and touching. To see our priests getting their feet washed and doing the same to their flock, to see a 60-year-old man washing a toddler’s small feet, to see our beloved deacon couple do the same, perhaps for the last time, and then share a kiss, is seeing Christ living and moving and being among us.

We silently and reverently pray and go out to the world, being Christ’s hands and feet and heart.

We are hoping to see all of our Ascension parishioners, friends and neighbors at our annual Fall Fiesta next week on Sunday, September 11, 2011. We’ll start the day with a bilingual (English and Spanish) mass at 9:30 AM in the church. Immediately following the mass, you can join the community in the parking lot for music, dancing, and — of course — delicious food.

Latino members of our parish have signed up to bring some of their favorite foods from their home countries, so you can expect the culinary delights as you’ve enjoyed in years past. We are still looking for more people to bring food representing their own traditions; if you would like to bring a dish to the event, please contact the parish office at 612-529-9684.

Proceeds from food sold at the event will go to benefit the Our Lady of Guadalupe Committee as they prepare to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe this December.

If you have any questions about the Fall Fiesta, please contact the parish office at 612-529-9684. Whether you come to eat, to dance, to sing, or to be among your friends and neighbors, we are looking forward to seeing all of you at this great event on the 11th.
